The status quo is often grasped with such white knuckles that convincing the elephant of inertia to move can be a daunting task, especially when some of the ideas you are presenting go against deeply entrenched ideals and beliefs.
It can thus be difficult sometimes to stay true to your course, and you will find yourself full of doubt. It is during these times that you should look to your team (provided you have surrounded yourself with the right people). Many great minds focused on a single goal can be a force multiplier.
My team is on a noble journey. We are trying to change the way fitness gets delivered, professionalize the gym industry, and in doing so, have a direct impact on healthcare.
There have been many obstacles along the way (there will be many more), and we have made some bad decisions, but we have always tried to fail forward. Learn. Adapt. Move on.
Will we make some enemies along the way? Sure. Will we fail a few to help the many? Yes. But our team knows that the truth is never offensive, and that the data will lead the way. As a leader, you have to be willing to give up control. You can’t be the one making all the decisions. You must instead offer a framework for your team to test a choice. Within those boundaries, they are free to make decisions, right or wrong; and you have to let them.
That is the culture you must create.
Besides, if you know every step along the way, and every decision is obvious, where is the fun and adventure? Where is the risk?
